International Woman’s Day

International Woman’s Day (IWD) is Monday 8th March 2021 and has been the 8th March ever since 1911. IWD should be important for all who care about human rights and the equality of all. This day can be supported by men, just as much as women. The colours which represent IWD are purple, green and white - purple represents justice and dignity, green represents hope and lastly white represents purity.

This year the 2021 theme is #ChooseToChallenge, if you choose to challenge, from challenge comes change. This is highlighting the importance to challenge inequality such as in the work place, challenge sexism, challenge an unequal pay gap. A way to get involved and show your support is by posting an image with your hand raised to show that you choose to challenge inequality and that anyone else can do this to. Post your photo with the #ChooseToChallenge, here you can also look at other posts people have posted in support of IWD.

On the 8th March this is a day for everyone ot come together to celebrate women and their achievements. To also appreciation the progression woman has made in society with becoming equals, such as the newly appointed Vice President of America Kamala Harris. This is a monumental moment in history, the first female Vice President. With Kamala not just representing women, but also representing women of colour. Women have come so far however, there is still inequality which should be challenged and changed.

So how can you help? Whether you are a female or male anyone can help with this movement and support women. By celebrating and acknowledging woman achievements, that they are just as important as male achievements. By raising awareness against bias, helping people to understand the importance of equality, showing the signs of someone being treated unfairly. By raising the awareness that it is not acceptable and inequality of woman should be something of the past. Finally, to act for equality, speak up and stand up for those who are being discriminated for their gender. The more support and help, the greater the difference.

Large brands support International Woman’s Day such as McDonalds, Nottingham Trent University, European Bank and DHL. These brand not only support the movement but actively bring the opinions into their business and ensure equality for women. This demonstrates these companies have equal opportunities for men and women, with equal pay and promotions. Enabling women to be appreciated leading to increased morale at work. This encouraging more companies to begin to join and ensure their businesses are promoting women equality.
